A New Technique for Controlled Bone Augmentation: The Sonic Weld Device

Great! But first the lost bone volume must be reconstructed. Therefore bone must be added/implanted in sufficient quantity and volume so as to incorporate the dental implants.

So how do you build new bone? 

Building bone, or bone augmentation, can be accomplished in several ways. For example, bone can be taken from various other locations in the oral cavity and implanted in the specific site lacking bone. This technique, however, is aggressive and complicated: moreover, it usually requires an additional surgical procedure to remove the screws used to secure the new bone in place.

Yes, with the aid of SonicWeld, which allows the dentist to augment bone and restore the missing bone topography in a controlled way, by means of the ultrasonic device and resorbable pins and membranes. 

The membranes and pins used in the SonicWeld technique are composed of lactic acid (Poly-D-L-lactic acid or PDLLA), which is resorbed by normal body metabolism without leaving a residue. The degradation process is gradual and is completed only after consolidation of the new bone formed in the implantation site.

The lactic acid polymer of PDLLA - a neutral body substance - is broken down into water and CO2 as part of the normal body metabolism.

An important advantage of the material is its exceptional dimensional stability, allowing the dentist to perform bone augmentation with precision in the dimensions of height and volume, which then remain unchanged during the consolidation phase.
